A Life of Faith and Service

About Img Dr. Jim Dixon, born in Hollywood, California, on December 10, 1946, and raised in the serenity of La Canada, embarked on a profound spiritual journey from a tender age. The youngest in a devout Christian family, he accepted Jesus as his Savior at five, influenced by his Presbyterian roots and his mother’s charismatic faith.

Jim’s quest for knowledge took him to Westmont College, Santa Barbara, where he majored in psychology in 1968. His academic journey didn’t end there; he furthered his theological understanding at Fuller Seminary, earning an MDiv in 1972 and a DM in in 1976.

1971 marked a joyous chapter in Jim’s life as he married Barbara Jean Batts. Their blessed union brought forth two children, Heather and Drew. Jim began his pastoral mission at Faith Presbyterian Church in Aurora, Colorado, nurturing many in faith as the Minister of Education.

In 1982, Jim co-founded Cherry Hills Community Church in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, leading it as the Founding Senior Pastor until 2013. Under his leadership, the church saw exponential growth and became recognized as a beacon of faith. Dr. Dixon’s sermons, known for their scholarly depth and relatable narratives, reflected his deep Scriptural understanding.

A pillar in the Christian community, Jim contributed significantly to the Evangelical Presbyterian Church (EPC) and various Christian organizations. His literary works and the Barb and Jim Dixon Ministry Endowed Scholarship at Denver Seminary extend his spiritual legacy.

Jim authored impactful books such as “Vice & Virtue: The Battle Within,” and “Last Things Revealed: Hope for Life and the Everafter.” His retirement in 2013 to La Quinta, California, with his wife, marked the end of over three decades of dedicated service.

Jim’s earthly journey concluded on March 23, 2016, but his legacy endures through his family, his writings, and the Jim Dixon Sermon Library website—a testament to his unwavering commitment to spreading the Gospel.

Loved The Bible

About Img2 Jim, while holding esteemed degrees like an MDiv and DMin from Fuller University, was much more than his academic achievements. He was genuinely approachable and deeply passionate about the Bible. You’d often find him at home or in his office, completely absorbed in scripture, pouring over every word with great care. His studies weren’t just academic; he was excited to share his insights and wisdom with others. Jim’s teachings transformed from mere lessons into vivid, relatable stories, rich with practical life applications. Impressively, he had most of the New Testament committed to memory, always ready to quote and share. More than a pastor, Jim was a relatable storyteller who brought faith to life in an inspiring way. His greatest fulfillment came from helping others find their connection with Jesus through the words he held dear.

Passionate about Travel

About Img3 Jim’s passion for travel took him and many others to biblical lands like Israel, Jordan, Turkey, Greece, and Rome. He wasn’t just a tourist; he immersed himself in the history of these sacred places and was always eager to share his discoveries. But these trips were more than sightseeing tours. They were journeys that brought the Bible’s stories to life. On the road, in the bus, the group bonded – sharing meals, laughter, and relaxation, while learning about the very places where biblical events unfolded. This experience allowed Jim and Barb to foster deeper connections with fellow travelers, strengthening the community spirit within the church. These travels were more than just trips; they were shared adventures that created lifelong memories and a sense of unity for everyone involved.

A Sports Buff

About Img4 Jim was the kind of guy who lived and breathed sports. Ever since his college days, where he was always part of a team sport, he had this love for athletic competition. Running was another of his passions – he was all about pushing his limits and staying on top of his personal fitness game. And let’s not forget his dedication to professional football. When he and Barb moved to Colorado in 1970, he quickly became a die-hard Denver Broncos fan. Golf was another of Jim’s favorite pastimes, often hitting the links with his son, family, and friends. It wasn’t uncommon to hear him bringing up the Broncos in his sermons, whether they were on a winning streak or having a tough season. For Jim, sports were more than just games; they were a significant part of who he was.
